This year we participated in “Back to Old School 2010,” a community block party for the Sixth through Fourth blocks on Allen Street. The block party was sponsored by the Weed & Seed program and organized by Titana Tooley and Milagros Ramos. About 500 people showed up for the beautiful Sept. 11 neighborhood gathering, which ran from 1 to 5 p.m. To raise the awareness of Cityspace in the neighborhood we offered tours of the child care center and handed out information flyers as well as apples. Three parents toured the day care center. Cityspace provided a Moon Bounce, face painting, Cops ‘n Kids book giveaways and a live band. The Moon Bounce, which was run by Eric Wilburn, was quite popular. Connie Rought, our center director, painted hundreds of flowers and animals on the children and one or two adults. With the help of our board members, we distributed 100 books to children and adults, who were very appreciative. The afternoon was filled with the music of Mad Dog and the Blues Night Out, which the entire neighborhood enjoyed.

Summer program is cool
Cityspace’s summer program made it possible for 24 children to enjoy a variety of fun activities that kept them cool and took them out of the city. This year our staff took photos of these trips, which were burned onto a DVD and will be given to each family to keep as a treasured memory of the good time their children had at Cityspace’s summer program.
With our center director, Connie Rought, and her staff, field trips took the children to the Lehigh Valley Zoo, the Pool Wildlife Sanctuary, Trexler Park and Cabela’s to enjoy the great outdoors and learn about animals and nature.
Our children also went bowling, to the Allentown Public Library and visited a nursing home. The children had a visit from an Allentown policeman to learn about bike safety. In August, they spent a day at Musikfest in Bethlehem and went school supply shopping at Wal-mart.
For food fun, children went to Domino’s Pizza where they made and ate their very own personalized pizza.
Parents, children and staff attended an IronPigs home game to end the summer program.
With the excessive heat this summer, our swim passes to Allentown pools were put to very good use. Unfortunately, the extreme heat caused our 25-year-old air conditioner in the homework room to stop working. We needed to use some of our summer program grant money to install a new unit.

A note from
Miss Connie
We welcome you back to a new school year. If you have any questions concerning the care of your child, please take a moment to talk with me or one of my staff members.
In your parent handbook, you have information about how we handle bad weather. Please know that the center closes only when the weather is so bad that it would endanger the health and welfare of the children and staff. To keep you informed we will use the radio, the television and the Internet. Please check the handbook for the places we post center closings information.
Daylight Saving Time ends Nov. 7: Turn clocks back 1 hour. For your home’s safety, it’s also a good time to make sure you have smoke detectors that have working batteries. Call the Allentown Health Bureau at 610-437-7598 to find out how to get or replace non-working smoke detectors.

Marketing Survey
As we prepare for our next 20 years of serving the Allentown community, we ask for your help in improving our child-care center. Cityspace is committed to providing affordable child-care service to the parents of Allentown School District children. In the next two weeks, a staff member will ask each of our parents to complete a questionnaire. Your name does not have to be on the survey but to be entered into a “thank you” gift drawing, we ask that you complete the card which will be attached to the questionnaire. Your help in making Cityspace a great place for children to grow, to learn and to play is greatly appreciated.

Cityspace achieves STAR 2
Cityspace achieved a Keystone STAR 2 level. This 20-year-old child-care center strives to improve its programs and staff qualifications through Keystone STARS, a state-sponsored, quality improvement initiative for Pennsylvania’s child-care providers. At the STAR 2 level, Cityspace’s staff was evaluated on their professional development, communication with parents and children, management and business practices.

A Keystone STARS designation lets parents know that their children are in a safe, respectful environment in which they are learning new things every day to support their current and future successes in school and in life. Since 1989, Cityspace has served the need for affordable, quality child care for parents in Center City Allentown. This STAR 2 designation will enable Cityspace to purchase learning materials for the children and offer bonuses to the staff. As Cityspace celebrates its 20th anniversary, the Center’s future goals include upgrading the computer room and expanding the arts and recreation programs.

Cityspace celebrated its 20th anniversary on Sept. 19, 2009. To help us remember our past, celebrate our presence at Dubbs UCC and look hopefully to the future were guest speakers: Rev. Dr. Tim Downs, co-founder; Ralph Todd, first board president; Janet Quinn, current board president; Carol Kobayashi and Rev. Carl Siegfried, Dubbs pastor.
